Overview
The Rotary Club of Gros Islet has worked on a large number of projects since being chartered in 1993. The first of these was the construction of the Gros Islet Bell Tower, followed by the Grow Well Centre on the other side of the road. Work with Grow Well continues to this day, as does the Club's support of one of the Grow Well tenants - CARE, the Centre for Adolescent Renewal and Education.
The Gros Islet Polyclinic has been a frequent beneficiary of the Club's efforts, having received a generator, water tanks, x-ray unit and several consignments of medical supplies over the years.
Through a partnership with Project CURE out of the US, additional medical equipment has been distributed throughout the island to the tune of well over US$1,000,000. With the assistance of Windward & Leeward Brewery Ltd. the most recent container of equipment was handed over to St. Jude's hospital in Vieux Fort following the devastating fire in early 2010.
Another partnership, this time with the US-based Wheelchair Foundation, has resulted in several hundred wheelchairs being donated to individuals throughout the island.
As Diabetes continues to be one of the biggest threats to life within the Caribbean, the Club has embarked on a number of initiatives to try to curb the number of deaths and lower limb amputations.
